In disaster movies, it’s always the build-up to whatever happens that’s most exciting. The cellphones stop working, a strange scent is noticed and that’s that. BANG. Chaos. The End. Nowadays, it’s easy to follow that build-up online.
Reading io9 today, I discovered that National Association of Radio-Distress Signalling And Infocommunications (lovely name!) in Hungary has a clickable worldmap with all beginning or ongoing disasters.
Earthquakes, explosions, accidents, power failures, volcanic eruptions and anything else that scares the living daylight out of you. It has enough information to be scary but not too much, so that there’s still room for conspiracy theories.
I click an »Epidemic Hazard« that’s reported today.
Cause of event: Unknown illness dragging into the country from South Africa.
And so it begins. Time to check out the supply of water filters and iodine.
