A note of praise (and caution) of Vangelis

Chris Keating of Yeasayer says that Greek composer Vangelis was one of the influences for the group’s new album “Odd Blood”. Does he know what he is getting himself into by admitting that?

Vangelis

In a recent interview, Keating said:

“Yes, I listen to his music, especially the film scores he’s written. [...] Especially ‘Blade Runner’. The futuristic synthesizer music really made an impression when I was little.”

When I grew up, I used to run to the local video store and rent “Blade Runner” and “Mutiny On The Bounty”. $2 and they were mine for 72 hours. I used to play them in background while writing Dos-macros on my Amiga.

Later, I recorded the audio from the entire films onto cassette so I could listen in my Walkman. Mostly because of the music, since no soundtracks had been released back then.

Chris Keating’s bringing Vangelis back into the mix requires a certain filtering. To just drop his name like that is insanity since the collected works of Vangelis is a musical minefield. Exploration without guidance will only lead to tears and suffering.

Vangelis’ prime work comes from four soundtracks in the early 80s. And what a work it is. Back then he sat with an arsenal of analogue synthesizers and dreamt up the most beautiful music man can think of. Later, when he started orchestrating for real, something was just… lost.

However, the films “Antarctica”, “Chariots of Fire”, “Blade Runner” and “Mutiny On The Bounty” delivers moments of pure bliss. To help children everywhere with a proper selection, I’ve created a best of-playlist for Spotify:

Vangelis 1981-84 (and one from 92)

It clocks in on the hour, but seriously… You can’t listen to early Vangelis scores for any longer without cracking from melancholia.

If you can’t use Spotify, here’s the tracklist:

1. “Main Titles from ‘Blade Runner’”
2. “Antarctica Echoes”
3. “Opening titles from ‘Mutiny On The Bounty’”
4. “Fading Away”
5. “Memories of Green”
6. “One Alone”
7. “Blush Response”
8. “Desolation Path”
9. “Blade Runner Blues”
10. “Memory of Antarctica”
11. “Closing Titles From ‘Mutiny On The Bounty”
12. “Abraham’s Theme”
13. “End Titles From ‘Blade Runner’”
14. “Tears In Rain”
15. “Pinta, Nina, Santa Maria – Into Eternity”
