One of them sees this guy's name on a lot of books and is convinced that he must be swimming up to his neck in mutilated virgins' corpses and tips off the cops. The cops go a-raidin', take all the guy's stuff, maybe put him in the slammer for a while. Eventually they realize that they've been had and that they're going to look like idiots, so they muster all their guns to pin any kind of conviction on the guy so they won't have to admit any error.
