In a recent rant, Swedish journalist Carl Reinholdtzon Belfrage heavily criticized how he feels that music journalism has reduced itself to storytelling without an ounce of analysis or criticism. Uhm, sorry, but what else is there left? Read more

VIDEO: Beautiful live rendition of “Heartbeats” by The Knife
I stumbled across this absolutely gorgeous live performance of “Heartbeats” by The Knife. “Heartbeats” gained worldwide fame when Sony used the José González cover in their Bravia commercial, but I wonder if it ever has sounded this fragile and powerful before. Briliant.

After Squarepusher I’ll never predict the future from electronic music
Tonight, I’ll be part of a panel on Swedish national radio where we will discuss how pop music will sound 2019 instead of summarizing 2009. Preparing for that, I remembered a track that completely blew my mind ten years ago but which has aged horribly. Which is surprising, given the quality of it. That’s the thing with electronic music: It can never say anything about the future. Read more

Boards of Canada: “Go diagonal!”
A night almost ten years ago, I was on the last subway home when they took it out of service. Among hords of angry night commuters, I stumbled out into the suburb of Mälarhöjden in Stockholm. Phoenix on the street
When Phoenix played in Stockholm a couple of weeks ago, singer Thomas Mars elbowed his way through the crowd in the last encore and climbed the mixing desk to receive all of the love in the venue. When he passed me, I caught the moment and gave him a quick hug. Brilliant gig by a brilliant band. I was happy.
Don’t miss the four songs that Phoenix have recorded live on the streets of Paris for La Blogotheques “Concerts a emporter” series. Just as beautiful as that moment.

VIDEO: Daft Punk medley by insane piano dude
Normally I can’t stand the jillions of YouTube videos with people interpreting pop songs on their instrument of choice. Of course they’re all skilled and that, but most of the times it just feels so… pointless. Not with this dude, tho. If you like Daft Punk, watch it through till the end.

Michael Jackson isn’t Michael Jackson – so what?
There are rumours about body doubles being used in the upcoming Michael Jackson documentary “This Is It”. In the film, Jackson performs dance routines which, according to his sister La Toya, he wasn’t fit to do at the time.
The producers are furious over the claims. In an interview with TMZ one of them says: “This story is pure garbage and there are no body doubles”.
Uhm. Does it really matter? Michael Jackson has never and will never be about authenticity. Read more

“The best song ever written” – Paul Morley’s writing on Joy Division
When it comes to music journalism, there are a number of texts that I always return to, texts that are to me what “Be My Baby” was to Brian Wilson. Some of my absolute favourites are Paul Morleys on Joy Division and New Order from the “Palatine” box-set. Read more
